LADD Championship Bout

As alluded to in the previous post last Saturday was LADD Roller Derby night. The championship bout to be exact. We had a large crew meeting up at the Dolls new home, The Doll Factory. They're no longer at the top of the mall in Japan Town. Now they're playing in Historic Filipinotown. Not too bad a place to get to. The cab ride was just about the same from the Chinese Jet Pilot's pad in Pasadena to the Dolls new home as to their old one. CJP, myself, Mrs. LK and Mr. Kimono all met in Pasadena and cabbed it to the game. We met Fancypants and his cousin there. Will&Grace and his new girlfriend also met us there.

There was the fairly standard line to get in when we got there. It didn't take too long to get in. It was freakin' cold though. I was certainly glad I wore a long sleeve shirt under my Fight Crew jersey. Saw Busta while we were waiting in line. He suggested we head over to the Drunk Scouts section in the VIP bleachers, but we've got a love for the general admission section on turn two so we set up camp there holding spots for everyone. Just after we finished check-in though I was met by Tara Armov. She came bearing gifts from the Crew. See the picture below.


That's right folks. More shwag. That's a full set of the Fight Crew trading cards. W00t! There was also a new full size team sticker and though it's almost not visible at the top a Fight Crew skull cap. Yeah baby! Now I'd root for this team regardless, but man you just can't beat this. Thank you team Fight Crew! I'd summarize the game, but Busta does a way better job than I do. Quick summary though. It was a tight game pretty much from the get go and it went all the way down to the last jam. Unfortunately the Fight Crew was beaten in the last jam with a four point jam. Taking the score from 29-31 in favor of the Crew to 33-31 in favor of the Sirens. Congratulations to the Sirens as they earned every point and the Championship trophy.


Can't wait for the season to kick off in 2008. Here's one final pic with me sporting my new cap.



ps I wasn't beneath picking trading cards up off the floor or stealing other peoples. I have doubles of Leia Mout, Apocalyptica and Trixie Biscuit. I've got triples of Tawdry Tempest. One of those was saved after someone threw it down and stomped on it. Grrr.

Ramming Speed!

Another grand night at the Doll House in Little Tokyo. Sirens versus the Tough Cookies. The cookies took an early lead in the first quarter, but the Sirens soon caught up and the two teams traded the lead for the rest of the night. Good, clean fun. Mostly.

Every time we go we buy raffle tickets for whatever the crap is that they're giving away. Now it's not really crap. They usually give away skate board decks, t-shirts, stickers. Pretty much general shwag. Not this past match, but the one before they actually gave away an electric guitar. So they do have some decent prizes, but really we're just buying to support the Dolls. Same reason we buy VIP tickets and then never sit in the bleachers. So anyway the CJP has a history of winning the damn prizes. Prior to last night he won a skateboard deck one night and shwag bag with a t-shirt and stickers and what not in it. You can see what's coming next right? Well he won another skateboard deck last night. Just so you all know he doesn't skate. Well. Never did.

So now he's got two decks. I think I posted a picture of our stuff in an earlier post. So while I was away using the facilities he wanders off to scrounge up a pen so he can get the deck signed by some of the girls. Pretty cool. He comes back with it signed by four of the Dolls. Needless to same I'm suitably impressed and pretty darn stoked for him. (Yes I just used the word stoked.)

And then he gives the deck to me.

Me.

Signed by none other than the captain of my team, Fight Crew, Tara Armov, my teams main enforcer Broadzilla and an all around hell raiser Tawdry Tempest. He also got the Tough Cookies Suzy Snakeyes to sign it as well. How fucking cool is that? Pretty damn cool let me tell you. Tara even got beer juice all over it since she was emptying the trash cans at the time. (Yes folks the Dolls aren't above cleaning their own house when visitors are over.) Oh and I got suckered into buying a CD from one of the bands that played, Los Desnudos. They did punk cover tunes, but the album is not punk. Not bad though.

The Cool(Hot) Wind In Your Face

It looks like our friend Christy has become a permanent member of the Fight Crew. She is fast! We saw her officially for the first time at the Baby Doll Brawl, but this last bout on Feb. 10 saw her make her official debut with one of the active teams. Turns out it's my team. Not that that stopped CJP and Pretty In Pink from cheering for her too. I wasn't able to snap a good picture of her from our vantage point AWAY FROM THE SIDE OF THE TRACK. The Dolls normal photographer, Roger Snider, did get a great one of her in the track infield. Judy Gloom had the picture posted on her flickr page. It was, however, marked as All Rights Reserved so I sent off a quick note to Ms. Gloom requesting permission to post the pic here. She said yes and here it is. Go Christy! Err, I mean, Go Lea Mout!

Derby. It's Not Just A Hat

The CJP and I headed back downtown for the final match of the season for our L.A. Derby Dolls. For the second match in a row the CJP scored on the raffle. We're starting to wonder just how many times he's won before, but didn't stick around for the raffle to find out. Dumbass. He gave me one of the shirts he won and some more stickers.


The pink stine was the VIP gift this time. Not sure when I'll break it in, but break it in I will.

It was the Fight Crew vs. the Sirens, pictures at flickr, and my Fight Crew took it to 'em. Below is a quick snippit of one of the jams. It was taken with my digital camera and then compressed so the vid quality isn't the best, but you'll get the idea. Roller derby rocks and so does the Fight Crew. They're in red while the Sirens are in black.


December 2nd they're having an exhibition bout to break in the rookies or the fresh meat as they called it. Woohoo! Be there or be square. It starts at 5:30 at the Doll House in Little Tokyo.

Derby Dolls vs The Sirens

The Chinese Jet Pilot and I headed back downtown Saturday night to Japantown and the Little Tokyo Mall for some more L.A. Derby Dolls action. Woohoo!! Another great night. Traffic was hell getting to Pasadena to meet up with everyone, but the cab ride back downtown was a breeze. We got the same cab driver as last time. The cab ride home was another story. Piece of shit cabby playing stupid on how to get to the 110. Bastard added $15 onto the ride. Still better than driving in, but damn. Little bastard. Funny thing is the ride has consistently been like $30 or so and we've consistently tipped like $10. If the little fucker had just taken us straight home with no detours he'd have made an extra $10 off the books. As it was he got nothing.

Anyway, I'm not sure exactly when we got there, but luckily Fancy Pants and Bro-In-Law got there early and snagged a spot by the track. Same corner as last time. I snapped a quick phone pic of some of the Fight Crew girls this time, but I still didn't bring a good camera. I guess I'm a little shy about bringing it downtown, but really the last two times have been great so next time for sure. Risky Business came with us this time too. CJP and GM actually were the first ones to go to a bout way back at the beginning of the summer and extolled the virtues of Roller Derby to the rest of us. Luckily they were convincing.

Well I seem to have picked a good team to root for. The Fight Crew have kicked some ass at the last two bouts I've seen. Last month there were a couple of really nasty spills with Iron Mayven going into the rail in a nasty way and Jihad dislocating her shoulder. Both were there Saturday, but the Mayven's team wasn't skating and Jihad was still recovering for the title match in November.

They have all kinds of merch on sale at the events. Their own stuff as well as other vendors who I guess help sponsor the league. The Dolls also sell raffle tickets for prize bags. Well the CJP has been buying tickets from the very beginning, but has never come home with anything. Well he finally has. He got a gift bag with all the stuff seen below, with the exception of the flask. He got that at the last bout for buying a VIP ticket. And yes that is a skate board deck that he won. The crazy fool is actually going to outfit the damn thing and then attempt to ride it. Oi!


He gave me some of his stickers, but I ended up buying all my other stuff rather winning it. Heh.


I put the new license plate bracket on today. Forgot to take a picture though. Oh well. Picture a dirty ass dark grey Camry with the above license plate. Oh and a I heart Derby Girls bumper sticker in the front window.

Roller Derby Baby!

So not last weekend, but the one before we headed out to NoHo to check out some roller derby. We managed to pick a weekend where a hole had formed in the crust of the earth and lava and fire were pouring forth creating hell on earth. So hot in fact that I broke down and bought this overpriced, oversized fedora. Not that I wasn't happy to have it at the time mind you. Still, I don't know when or if I'll wear it again.


The bout we showed for was the first of the season. Here's the schedule for the rest of the season. Of course we'll be out of town for the first banked track, but oh well. I'll give up roller derby for Maui any day.


There are four teams in the LA Derby Dolls league. It certainly doesn't seem to be a high dollar franchise at this point, but that doesn't seem to matter because even with the heat the ladies went out there and seemed to have some fun.
